Yunnan Coffee in 2024 and Beyond: What to Expect from this Region?
During the 2024 harvest season, our team embarked on an exhilarating journey through the vibrant coffee fields of Yunnan, meticulously collecting and analysing green bean data. Our findings have uncovered a treasure trove of delights, particularly in the realm of natural and washed coffee beans. Here are our key takeaways from the Yunnan coffee competition lots - top 6 cupping session that will thrill coffee enthusiasts:
Stellar Performance of Natural and Washed Beans
This year’s top six washed and natural beans are nothing short of spectacular. Gone are the days of earthy, muddy flavours—these beans have achieved a new level of purity and cleanliness, free from the dreaded “devil’s aftertaste”. This transformation results in a cup that is refreshingly clean and pure, elevating the entire coffee-drinking experience.
Mocha: The Star of the Washed Group
Among all the samples, we were impressed by one Mocha varietal, which ranked third place in the competition in the washed group. This bean dazzles with its sophisticated spice aromas and robust body, offering a sensory experience that is both complex and deeply satisfying. It's a coffee that leaves a lasting impression, promising a memorable journey with every sip.
Natural Gesha: Quality That Speaks Volumes
The natural Gesha, priced between 2400 and 2500 CNY per kilogram, is a true testament to excellence. Just one taste is enough to recognize their superior quality. These beans, with their unparalleled flavour, are worth every penny, making it clear why they are a standout choice for discerning coffee lovers.
Rich, Intense Flavors of Natural Beans Overall
This season, natural beans are bursting with intense, rich flavours that highlight the unique qualities of this processing method. These beans showcase an incredible depth of fruitiness and sweetness, making them a favourite among those who crave a bold and flavorful cup.
Aini Estate’s Gesha: The Pinnacle of Perfection
Topping both the washed and natural categories, the Gesha from Aini Manor is the epitome of coffee perfection. This extraordinary bean offers a taste journey akin to the native Ethiopian Gesha, with its rich, layered flavours and distinctive aroma. It’s a coffee that stands out as a true gem in the world of specialty coffee.
Purple Caturra
In recent years, Yunnan Caturra has successfully drawn attention from the Chinese domestic coffee industry as it is one of the few Yunnan native varietals showing high potential. Among all the coffee beans we are cupping for this harvest season, purple Caturra from the Xishuangbanna area, varietal DeRe 296, is definitely the most impressive one.
Honey Processing: A Journey of Discovery
While honey processing showed some variability, with the Catimor and Sarchimor varieties displaying inconsistent fermentation and mixed aftertastes, this method holds promise. It highlights the need for further refinement to unlock its full potential and achieve a more consistent, high-quality result.
The future of Yunnan coffee is nothing short of brilliant. This season has seen remarkable improvements in natural and washed processes, with top-tier Gesha beans and leading batches showcasing exceptional quality. These beans are making waves not only domestically but also on the international stage. However, the high price and limited accessibility in markets like the UK remain challenges to address for better cost-effectiveness.
Our discoveries this season fill us with excitement and anticipation for the future of Yunnan coffee. We eagerly look forward to savouring more of these exquisite beans, knowing that each cup will bring new heights of pleasure and delight.
